Before joining Advance Capital, Sean was employed by the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local Union 876 as Legal Counsel. Prior to that, he spent 10 years as the principal elected officer of IBEW Local 275 in Western Michigan.

Sean graduated from Davenport University with a BA in Business Administration with a concentration in Finance and is a graduate of Thomas M. Cooley Law School with a Juris Doctor.

Were there any particular learning experiences that prepared you for this role?

During my time as Business Manager of IBEW Local 275, I was also a trustee for a multi-employer pension and health funds. We focused on building strong benefits within the confines of funding and investment policies to support the continued strength of these funds. During these experiences, I learned the value of trusted investment and financial planning services and why they are critical to the success of institutions and individuals.

What influenced your decision to join ACM?

As a representative of working families, I often discussed planning, pensions, health care and many other issues that impacted their lives outside of work. I was lucky to have known several advisers at Advance Capital, so our members had a resource that many do not. I want to be sure that our Local Unions, Institutions and individuals know they have a trusted partner that they can direct their members to who understands their benefits and will support their success with a fiduciary standard.

How does ACM’s culture and resources contribute to your work?

ACM is proud to be a fiduciary for clients, not needing a regulation to require this. This means that our clients’ interests always come first, and their education and success is our only goal. Further, ACM puts their resources to work to ensure that we and our clients have the best technology, research, education and other tools to ensure that we are all moving in the right direction. This highlights ACM’s commitment to adviser and client success.

Have any experiences outside of the financial services industry shaped the way you think of your role at the firm?

Growing up, I didn’t really know what I was capable of accomplishing.  But, I was lucky to have a family friend who pointed me toward the IBEW, through which I became a journeyman electrician.  I knew that a skilled trade was invaluable to my long-term success, but being part of the IBEW really allowed me to spread my wings and take my education and training to a level I had never imagined. This path has given me experience in all aspects of life and brings an understanding that connects me with the challenges of clients.

What do you think is important about giving back to your community--both at the firm and for you personally?

To me, life is about serving others. This certainly includes serving others professionally, but we must also use our time, energy and talents to give to others who are working hard to achieve a better life. Each time we volunteer, donate money or bring items to a charity for distribution, we are not only giving someone a bit of support, we are showing everyone that we care about them. While it may seem small, these tiny ripples of hope spread and create a stronger, more equitable community where all have the opportunity to succeed.
